Tips For Moving
Things To Handle A Couple Weeks Before Closing:
- Make sure you have been in contact with your lawyer’s office and have arranged for an appointment. If not, call them. You will need to meet with your lawyer a few days before closing. Make sure you bring 2 pieces of identification each and one set of your house keys to your meeting.
- Plan to be out of your home no later than 10am on the day or closing. Your home could close anytime between 9:30am-4:30pm. At that point, you are no longer the owner and are trespassing.
Make Sure All Your Service Providers are Aware of the Move:
- Make sure the following have been canceled; heat/ hydro, cable/ satellite/phone/internet, security system, any rented items (furnace, A/C, ice cube/water dispensers, water heater, water softener, etc.), furnace maintenance agreement, etc. Here are some of the contacts/links to moving forms.

- Any and all rental equipment should be returned to its rightful company. (I.e. Rogers cable box, modems, etc) If it is not returned, you may be charged a fee.
Thing To Do Before You Leave:
- Check all of your appliances and equipment to ensure that they are in working order. You are responsible for all appliances and equipment on and including the entire closing day (until 11:59pm), even if you have moved out.
- If you have pets, please arrange for their care during the move. Moving can be a very stressful time for pets.
Make sure you clean!
- Floors should be swept/ vacuumed and fridge and counters wiped clean.
- Defrost your fridge/ freezer and remember to keep the doors open for ventilation.
- Check outdoor sheds as well as the attic and cold cellars for belongings.
- Repair, patch, and repaint any holes in the walls (that are larger than a quarter in size).
Make Checklists!
- Perform a ‘Final Check’ of each room (including cupboards, closets, drawers, kitchen appliances, etc.) before leaving the home.
- Create an “essentials” box of items for the day of the move. (I.e. light bulbs, toilet paper, beverages, snacks, tissues, toiletries etc.) Ensure that your mobile phone is charged and that you have the charger with you. The landline may be disconnected; therefore, you may need an alternative.
