Tips on Preparing Your Home For Showings

Preparing your home for showings is an important part of the selling process. Homes that show well can sell for significantly more. Since buying a home is an emotional decision you want to make sure from the moment the potential buyers step in the door that they get a good vibe. So what does this mean for you?

Turn all the lights on. You want the home to be bright and inviting not dark and gloomy. Also, fumbling around trying to turn on light switches distracts the buyer from focusing on the features your home has to offer.

Put away clutter. They want to envision themselves living in the house and it’s hard to do that when there is someone else’s personal object laying around.

Leaving the house. This is a big one. It is especially hard for the potential buyer to envision themselves living in the home when the owner is sitting on the couch watching Netflix. It tends to make the buyer feel intrusive causing them to rush through the home. For more information click here to read our article on leaving your home for showings.

Don’t cook anything with a strong odour before the showing. Many people are sensitive to certain smells and may be turned off by strong smelling food odours.

Put away personal belonging. Hide expensive small items such as jewellery, electronics, and money. You also want to make sure any personal information such as bills, doctor’s appointment, etc are placed out of site.

– Open window curtains & blinds. You want to let in as much natural light as possible. The exception may be if you back on to something that is an eyesore.

– Focus on the Kitchen & Bathroom. If you don’t have time to clean the whole house focus on the bathrooms and kitchen. Hide all the clutter, wipe down the counter tops & close all the toilet lids.
