Is Downsizing Good or Bad?

Is Downsizing Good or Bad?

Why is it that we think of downsizing as a necessary evil, when in fact, it can be completely liberating and even luxurious! It should be a time to start thinking about yourself and what you really want/need to be happy, comfortable and stress-free.

We hold on to large family homes, long after our children have left and the space we pay to heat, cool, clean, paint, repair, decorate, insure and landscape, is no longer used. Isn’t there more enjoyable ways to spend our time and money? Hmmm… should I mow the lawn, or sit on the balcony with a cocktail. I know what I’d pick.

So many of us equate downsizing, with downgrading…it certainly doesn’t have to be. Maybe, it’s time to get a smaller place with all of the special little upgrades you’ve always wanted. Chances are that you are still going to end up with extra funds that you can use to your benefit.

It’s a phenomenon really. Think about how much you spend every year to maintain your home? Think about what you would be saving if your house was half the size.

Do we keep these spaces in anticipation that one of the forty-year-old kids will move home? Is it because of the household memories? Creature comfort? Do we just want to hold on to that investment? Or, is it because we just can’t face the horror of dealing with the process?

We would be really interested in your feedback. Please comment on this post and let us know what your rationale for hanging on to the family home is, or why you think that your older parents are keeping the family home, when you know it is starting to get harder for them to manage?
