Moving is a big deal for any family, but when you add kids into the mix, it can feel like pure chaos. Boxes everywhere, routines disrupted, and little ones who may not fully understand what’s happening – it’s no wonder parents feel overwhelmed. The good news? With a bit of planning and a few smart strategies, you can keep moving day manageable and even turn it into a positive memory for your kids.
Prepare Kids Before Moving Day
Children feel more secure when they know what’s coming. Talk openly about the move, why it’s happening, and what to expect. If possible, take them to see the new house ahead of time or show them photos so it doesn’t feel unfamiliar.
A few days before, pack a “first night” box for each child. Include pyjamas, a favourite toy or blanket, a bedtime book, and anything else that makes them feel comfortable. Having these items unpacked right away helps kids settle more quickly in their new space.
Keep a “Go Bag” Handy
On the big day, you’ll want a bag that stays with you instead of going on the moving truck. Pack it like you would for a long outing: snacks, water bottles, activities, a change of clothes, and any must-have items like diapers or school supplies. Having everything in one place saves you from digging through boxes when your child needs something urgently.
Arrange Childcare If Possible
If you have young kids, moving day will be much smoother if they’re not in the middle of the action. Ask a family member, friend, or sitter to watch them for a few hours. If that’s not an option, designate one room in the house as a “safe zone” where kids can relax while movers are working.
Stick to Familiar Routines
Kids thrive on routine, and moving day is anything but normal. Try to keep mealtimes and nap schedules as close to regular as possible. Even small things—like keeping their favourite snacks available or sticking to a usual bedtime story—help maintain a sense of normalcy.
Get Kids Involved
Older children may want to feel useful. Give them small jobs like labelling boxes, packing their own toys, or being in charge of their pet’s belongings. This not only keeps them busy but also gives them some control during a time of big change.
Make the First Night Special
Unpack the kids’ rooms first so they have a familiar, cozy space right away. Keep bedtime rituals the same—whether it’s a story, music, or a favourite stuffed animal. Once the essentials are taken care of, celebrate the move together. Order pizza, grab ice cream, or have a movie night in the new living room. Turning moving day into a family event helps kids see it as an adventure, not just a disruption.
Moving with kids will never be entirely stress-free, but a little planning goes a long way. By preparing in advance, sticking to routines, and finding ways to involve them, you’ll not only make the day easier but also create positive memories in the process.
